What is CBD?

If you follow the news you have probably heard about CBD and it’s growing popularity in the UK among people using CBD oil.

According to a recent study, and estimated 1.6 million people in the UK now consume CBD oil on a regular basis. A similar report forecasts the UK CBD market to grow 7 time larger than it currently is by 2021, with an estimated value of £1.1 billion.

So, what exactly is CBD oil? CBD, also know as cannabidiol, is 1 of many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Unlike it’s psychoactive cousin, THC, CBD cannot get you ‘high’.

CBD is believed to offer a wide range of wellbeing and health benefits, the vast majority of which are supported by a growing amount of scientific research.

CBD oil is made through an extraction process of the hemp plant. Usually CBD is sold as an oral tincture of vape e-liquid but can also be ingested through the skin and stomach via skincare and edible products respectively.

Learn more below about CBD, as well as how it is typically used as a treatment for a variety of ailments. In addition we will look at the most popular forms of CBD oil that are available on our website today, from CBD oil tinctures to vape oil, dummies, capsules, skincare, edibles and more.

The Basics of CBD Oil and Cannabidiol

CBD oil contains cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD oil is made through an extraction process of the hemp plant, then processing it into usable oil with varying CBD strengths available. Typically you’ll find 2 types of CBD oil:

- Whole plant, or “full spectrum” extract. This method makes an oil that contains a range of cannabinoids as well as CBD. “Full spectrum” CBD oil also contains terpenes, which research suggests can help boost the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD through the entourage effect.
With the addition of terpenes, these products are seen as more effective forms of CBD for treating inflammation. Full spectrum CBD products can contain traces amounts of THC, although the total amount is to low to get ‘high’.

- CBD isolate. Oils labeled as containing CBD isolate contain pure CBD with no other cannabinoids or terpenes. CBD isolate products contain zero THC and will state this on the packaging.

As this form of CBD contains non of the naturally-occurring terpenes that can be found in the hemp plant, it is not as popular as other full spectrum CBD products. If you are concerned about THC in a product, perhaps due to THC-based drug testing, CBD isolate products are ideal.

There a number of different methods used to extract CBD oil from the hemp plant. Typically CBD oil is extracted via ethanol extraction, which involves ethanol-based solvents to extract the required oil.

Another popular method of extraction is via fluid CO2 extraction. This method is preferred for large-scale production of high quality CBD oil. Often, CO2 extraction is listed as a feature of high quality, higher priced CBD products.

What is CBD Oil Used For?

Research into the use of CBD as a treatment is still in its infancy, the data currently available suggest that CBD may have a wide range of positive health and wellbeing benefits.

CBD has been linked to pain relief, making it a potential treatment for chronic pain among other conditions such as anxiety, depression and other psychological conditions.

In additional, CBD has been show to improve sleep and is used as a natural treatment for conditions such as insomnia. CBD is also being studied for acne, cardiovascular conditions, body composition, substance abuse recovery and more.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Cannabis which contains high amounts of THC is illegal in the UK, however it is legal to manufacture and consuming if it adheres to the regulations below. Unlike it’s psychoactive cousin, THC, CBD cannot get you ‘high’.

THC is strictly controlled in the UK via the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Misuse of Drugs Regulations Act 2001.

However, CBD is not listed as a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. In order for the product to be legal the strain of hemp used to make the CBD must be approved.

In addition to this, any CBD sold in the UK must contain less than 0.2% THC and contain no more than 1mg of THC per container.

In short, as long as the CBD product contains no THC (as labeled) or contains less than the above mentioned amounts, it is legal in the UK.

What Forms of CBD Oil Are Available?

As we have mentioned previously, CBD is available in many different forms including oil tinctures, capsules, dummies, skincare products, food, drink, vape and e-liquids and more. We stock the widest range of high quality CBD products in the UK including:

CBD Oil Tinctures - These are the most popular for of CBD and come as a tincture with a dropper or spray attachment depending on the product. Sold in a variety of different strengths (search our store by low, medium or high strength products to suit you), tinctures are the best option for you is you prefer to take CBD orally.

CBD Vape Oil - This form of CBD oil is mixed with a carrier oil that enables it to be vaporised. Also known as e-liquid or CBD vape liquid enables ingestion through vapour. Many customers say that is their preferred method of ingestion as it is the fastest and most effective way to take CBD.

CBD Vape Additives - Unlike CBD e-liquid, CBD vape additives are designed to be added to a vape oil. The contain a highly concentrated form of CBD that is diluted in the vape oil.

Edible CBD Products - Edible CBD products, also known ad CBD food and drink products, cover any CBD product that is ingested orally but isn’t an oil. For example, soft drinks, gum, cordials, gummies, muffins, tea, coffee, chocolate, sublingual strips, sweets and more.

CBD Balms - Skincare CBD products are designed to be taken up through the skin, CBD balms contain moisturising ingredients infused with CBD. Balms and other skincare products such as creams and body oils contain a lower amount of CBD than oil tinctures, vape products and other CBD products designed for oral ingestion.

CBD Batch Additives - Designed for use in your bath water, CBD bath bombs and other additives allow you to absorb CBD through your skin as you bathe. Similar to balms, most CBD bath additives only contain a relatively low dose of CBD.

CBD Capsules - CBD capsules are ingested orally and typically come in higher strength forms than topical products. CBD Capsules take longer to enter the bloodstream than vape and oil products.

CBD vs. THC: What’s the Difference?

Although hemp and marijuana are a part of the same family of plants, the two strains are very different. Plants strains that contain more than negligible amounts of THC are usually referred to as marijuana, whereas strains that contain a very low (or no) amount of THC are called hemp.

Hemp is naturally high in CBD cannabinoids, making it ideal for the production of CBD for oil tinctures, vape e-liquids and other products. CBD and THC target different cannabinoid receptors within the body, producing very different effects. See below for a list of these effect as well as other differences between CBD and THC.

- CBD IS NOT psychoactive, while THC IS - THC is a compound found in cannabis that causes the psychoactive ‘high’ effect. Consuming cannabis that contains THC will bring on a psychoactive effect that may give you a feeling of altered sense of sight, smell, and a variety of other effects.

Whereas CBD is not psychoactive. It may contribute to the reduction of some feelings such as pain or anxiety, it does not cause any high, usually associated with THC. Meaning your senses won’t be altered in any noticeable way.

- CBD is legal in the UK, while THC is not - CBD is legal to buy and consume in both the UK, Europe and the vast majority of states in the US. It’s no longer listed under the Controlled Substances Act and is not a controlled substance.

Whereas THC is illegal in the UK and Europe under the Controlled Substances Act, making it a controlled substance or illegal drug. Possession of THC in the UK can result in criminal prosecution.

- CBD inhibits certain cannabinoid receptors, while THC activates - THC and CBD compounds affect cannabinoid receptors in the body in very different ways. THC activates the CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD helps to reduces the effects of these receptors. This is a key reason why THC causes psychoactive effects, whereas CBD has no noticeable effects on your perception.

In summary, CBD is a cannabinoid that has been shown to a multitude of conditions including pain, anxiety and a range of other conditions. It is legal to purchase or consume in the UK and Europe and does not make you feel ‘high’.

Whereas THC will cause a psychoactive effect and is certainly no legal in the UK. In additional THC is not legal to consume or purchase in the UK or many other countries including much of Europe and some US states.
