Should you really change up your diet to include CBD for weight loss?
For many years, the stereotypical view of a cannabis user is one of a couch-locked stunner forever seeking out the next opportunity to satiate the ‘munchies’.
Since records began, consuming cannabis has been associated with what has been coined the ‘munchies’. A term used to describe the inability to refrain from seeking out and eating the most delicious (and convenient) food while under the influence of cannabis.

WEIGHT LOSS AND THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
A lower BMI and body weight among cannabis users may seem odd compared to non-users but an explanation lies in the function of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS is a network of neurotransmitters and receptors found throughout the body but is primarily located in the nervous and immune systems.
Endocannabinoids are substances found in the neurotransmitters. The body produces them to send messages to cells via receptors. Organic cannabinoids (Aka phytocannabinoids) like CBD act very similarly to endocannabinoids.
As with of systems in the body, there is a range of normal activity. When the system falls out of balance - towards either under activity or over activity - dysfunctions sets in.
Many studies conclude that in cases of obesity, diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome, there is strong evidence of endocannabinoid system hyperactivity.
New York state board certified health coach, Alicia Salazar, uses CBD with her clients to maximise their health improvements. “I don’t look at CBD as a magic bullet for weight loss,” she said. “But CBD along with a healthy diet – one that contains healthy fats, whole grains, grass-fed meat and dairy, and plenty of greens, without processed foods and sugar – sets the tone for a healthy weight. And for some, that can naturally include weight loss.”
HOW CAN CBD OIL HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

When is comes down to weight loss, or more importantly weight gain, is usually comes down to an imbalance between calories in and calories out. The long term effects of this hyper caloric condition is not always so simple to reverse.
Fixing a caloric excess with a calorie deficit sometimes works for weight loss, but it can be difficult. Firstly, reducing calories leaves you feeling hungry, which can lead to set-backs. Secondly, weight gain can cause changes to hormone levels, metabolic patterns, inflammation status, and balance within the endocannabinoids system. Sustainable weight less requires a return to healthy balance within these bodily systems. Recent studies have show cannabinoids are effective for regulating the ECS and also having a positive impact on the dysfunction occurring in other systems.
A certified holistic cannabis practitioner, Ric Tyler, has found that balance is essential. “I have used and recommended CBD for homeostasis and to bring the endocannabinoid system into proper tone so that it can properly serve other bodily processes” he says.
In reality Tyler hasn’t witnessed CBD acting directly to cause wight loss but believes that it corrects imbalances that would otherwise prevent extra weight from coming off.

A major feature of obesity and diabetes is insulin resistance, the normal metabolic process follows a repeatable pattern - 1) food is consumed, 2) blood glucose levels rise 3) the pancreas releases insulin to shuttle that glucose to the body cells, 4) the cells use the glucose to make energy.
In cases where eating patterns chronically provide excess glucose, the system shuts down. Body cells are unable to take on more glucose, so they become resistant to insulin’s signal to let the simple sugar into the cell.
Because it is so dangerous for blood glucose levels to remain high, the pancreas secretes even more insulin. Eventually, glucose levels plummet from the unusually high levels of insulin. Dietary changes are the most important change an individual can choose to get off the roller coaster. But CBD could lend a hand in the process. A 2018 study showed that the cannabinoids THC, CBD and CBN enhance cells’ ability to take up glucose. And they perform even better than metformin, a common pharmaceutical prescribed to lower elevated blood glucose in patients.

Metabolism is a big deal on the cellular level as well as the whole body level. The body performs it’s normal function by using inputs to create energy. The energy factories of the cells are Mitochondria. The mitochondria transform into energy when insulin delivers glucose to the cells. But when insulin resistance sets in, the mitochondria experience dysfunction as well.
Not only does mitochondrial dysfunction occur in imbalanced glucose conditions, but it may also play a role in cancer. Healthy mitochondria are essential for lasting vitality.
In 2016, a lab study observed the impact of CBD on the metabolic function of fat cells. This study noted a marked improvement in mitochondrial function with the application of CBD.
Cannabidiol’s ability to improve inflammatory conditions is very well documented. Within metabolic dysfunction, inflammation is consistently present.
The increased activity of the pancreas in an attempt to secrete additional insulin can cause inflammation throughout the gland. Chronic inflammation can actually destroy the beta cells which are the sites that secrete insulin. This downward spiral begins to diminish the body’s ability to make insulin all together– a dangerous route that can lead to diabetes.
A 2016 study showed that an overstimulated endocannabinoid system contributes to inflammation. The application of CBD corrected some of the dysfunction. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of CBD relieve the inflammation and potentially rescue pancreatic function from certain disaster. These actions may save individuals form diabetes.
Increased body fat is one of the greatest risk factors for obesity and diabetes. While this may seem obvious, the mechanism for the processes are not necessarily straight forward.
Not all fat cells are created equal. The most dangerous type of fat cells are “white” fat cells, which tends to gather around organs and stress their function.
The more benign type of fat cells are “brown” fat cells, which are often referred to as “baby fat”. This softer fat is easily used by the body to maintain body heat. White fat is much harder to lose.
The previously mentioned study which established improved mitochondrial function with CBD use also observed that CBD stimulates gene expression within white fat cells. This then initiates the “browning” of these cells. This mechanism shows promise with converting difficult to loose white fat into a more easily burnable form. Additionally, researchers found that CBD decreased the rate of new fat cell creation.
Damage to live cells is another marker of obesity and diabetes. The liver is a major organ in the conversion between stored energy forms and useable energy forms in the body. Overburdening that system, such as with high fructose intake, can have disastrous effects. Inflammation within the liver indicates the onset of dysfunction, and possibly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
In 2015, researchers analysed the impact of two non-psychoactive cannabinoids – CBD and THCV – on metabolic dysfunction.
Results indicated that these substances reduce the buildup of triglycerides in the liver. In addition, they improved insulin resistance and lowered blood pressure in human subjects with type 2 diabetes. The anti-inflammatory qualities of CBD take partial credit for these improvements.

•1/4 cup brown sugar
•3 Tbsp soy sauce
•2 cloves garlic
•1 Tbsp fresh ginger, grated
•Freshly cracked pepper
•1 Tbsp cooking oil
•5 drops of cbd oil .
•8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (about 1.75 lbs total) •1/2 Tbsp cooking oil
•2 green onions
•1 tsp sesame seeds.
1 Mince the garlic and grate the ginger using a fine holed cheese grater or box grater. In a small bowl stir together the brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, some freshly cracked pepper (about 15 cranks of a pepper mill), and cooking oil. Place the chicken thighs in a shallow dish or a gallon size zip lock bag. Pour the marinade over the chicken and turn to coat. Cover the chicken and marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to a day (refrigerated).
2.When ready to cook the chicken, heat a large skillet over medium flame. Once hot, add 1/2 Tbsp cooking oil and swirl to coat the bottom of the skillet. Add half of the chicken pieces and let cook until well browned on each side and cooked through. Remove the cooked chicken to a clean plate, then repeat with the second batch.
3.Once all the chicken has been removed from the skillet, pour the leftover marinade into the skillet and allow it to come up to a boil. Whisk the marinade as it boils to dissolve any browned bits from the skillet. Let it continue to boil until it reduces to a thick glaze. Turn the heat off, add the cooked chicken back to the skillet, and dredge it in the thick glaze. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.

THE VERDICT ON CBD OIL FOR WEIGHT LOSS
The evidence strongly suggests the health of the endocannabinoids system being inextricably tied to the health of the whole body. In fact, measuring levels of endocannabinoid activity is a newly proposed marker of metabolic health.
Overall, this recent research shows great promise in developing new potential therapies that are effective and safe for obesity and diabetes.
It’s important to remember, though, that these areas of study are still very new and in their early stages. This makes it hard to predict just how far their reach and impact will be.
